Peruanista is a blog written by a Peruvian living in the United States. My goal for this site is to promote Peru’s culture, natural beauty and its amazing cuisine. Additionally since I have been a latino living in the United States I may touch on issues that affect latinos here in the US.

The section I am going to start writing first is the one related to the great Peruvian Cuisine. I have traveled and lived all over the world and I can honesty say that it is one of the best cuisines in the world.

Until a few years ago, it was hard to find a good Peruvian restaurant close to where I lived. So if you wanted to eat a good Peruvian dish you had to make it yourself. But when I arrived in the US in the mid-80’s I did not know how to cook anything. I can still remember the first ceviche I tried to make when I was in college, it was really, really bad!

Then one of my classmates at MIT started a Peruvian mailing list. It was basically a mailing list managed using the LISTSERV mailing application. This was the late 80’s so it was state-of-the-art for social networking! The list started with only a handful of email addresses, but as other Peruvians overseas started hearing about it, the list grew exponentially. We had people from all over the world and within a year it had thousands of email addresses. Since most of the people in the list were living outside of Peru, you can guess what the number 1 topic of conversation was… Peruvian recipes!

We shared our own cooking experiments, what substitutes worked, etc. Many of the recipes that I am posting on this site are based on those recipes that were initially shared so many years ago. I also want to thank Lino Becerra who saved the recipes being sent to the mailing list and summarized it in one document that he then shared back with everyone on the mailing list.

I am hoping you enjoy the recipes! Please leave me a comment with your thoughts on what I can do to improve the site or if you have comments on the recipes themselves.
